A New Voice in the XXX Debate
The debate about the pros and cons of pornography is something of a tired old topic; anyone remotely interested in or connected to the adult industry has really heard it all before. However in recent years there has been and interesting shift in not what is being said, but in who is saying it - for the first time, women are locking horns with other women about porn.
On the anti side are the usual conservative groups concerned about what they see as the decline in moral standards porn encourages or the potentially negative imagery of women that people can be exposed to, nothing new really. However on the pro side, the studios, the producers and consumers, which have usually always been represented by men, are now joined by an increasingly vocal group of women who are either directly involved in the production of adult material or are porn lovers themselves.
The group of female porn fans are extremely interesting not just because they are prepared to speak out about their use of porn DVDs but the fact that they are there at all as a group is quite astounding when you think of the historically male dominated adult world. People are listening to this group of women too, not only because they value their opinion as women or because having women speak positively about porn is great publicity for this much maligned industry - but because women are increasingly important consumers. Although women still buy significantly less pornography than men, they tend to spend more on each purchase than men do and industry is keen to court this willingness to buy the top quality adult releases that men sometime shun on the basis of quantity over quality.
The female industry players and proponents of porn are also a very powerful force and seem to attract a considerable amount of fury and distaste from their female counterparts in the anti lobby. Women porn directors and producers are increasingly common and they inevitably don't just quietly make adult films, they see themselves as a positive female voice in an industry tired of being demonized. Their message is usually simple, honest and totally logical. Women are sexual entities too and as long as the imagery shows them on an equal footing with men, enjoying sex in a way that they wish then there can simply be nothing wrong with this. They also are very keen to point out the benefits of women using pornography for sexual recreation and as a way to explore their own sexual interests and desires in a safe and controllable way.
The debate between women about porn will continue just as it has for so many years between the more traditional pro and anti lobbyists but it is refreshing to see a shift in the playing field and hear some fresh new voices with a unique perspective to add to the mix.
