Porn and Technology

Many people are aware that the development of the early Internet was heavily influenced by the adult industry but most people think of this as an interesting and possibly slightly disturbing, historical fact that has little bearing on what we see on line today. The truth is that the adult industry is still at the forefront of technological innovation and drives a lot more development than mainstream big business would like to admit.

The early 1990's and the almost passing exoteric interest in the embryonic Internet seem a world away now but this was a period of intense technological and conceptual growth. The adult industry was at the forefront of this brave new world and was both an early adopter of emergent technology and the engine that fuelled its development and improvement. The porn industry was, and in many ways still is, something of a marginalized cottage industry because it can't exist in the same space and compete with mainstream big business on the same terms. This brings many disadvantages but has also allowed for a certain creativity and risk taking attitude to develop in a way that the normal corporate world and its shareholders would baulk at.

This conceptual agility and have a go attitude are credited with bringing eventual mainstream acceptance to a whole range of technologies that we now simply take for granted. For example, long before the development of the XXX DVD, the adult industry was one of the early adopters of video cassette recording technology as a means of cheaply and easily distributing porn films to a home audience who had previously relied on ancient reel to reel cine films as the only way of viewing porn at home.

When the Internet emerged as a new way of mass content delivery, the adult industry was there again and was an early adopter of technologies such as digital photography and streaming video. However this is not something that is consigned to the history books, it is still happening today with smart phone video services selling phone optimized porn to more and more consumers who tomorrow will be come customers of services delivering mainstream content.

The key point about the adult industry is that it is not constrained by many of the limiting factors mainstream business must face. Many web and technology firms maintain parallel business, one for porn, the other for mainstream. The adult world leaps upon any new technology and thoroughly puts it through its paces giving the development companies a very fertile, easy to enter, responsive and tech savvy proving ground in which to develop and refine new products and services. Once deemed ready for mainstream rollout, developers can be assured that they have minimized risk buy debuting products that are already tried and tested in the porn world and are robust and scalable enough to meet the much more lucrative demands of the mainstream market.

Whether you like porn or not, it is beneficial in more ways than many people would care to admit and as long as the adult industry continues to embrace emergent technologies ahead of big business, this is unlikely to change.
