Adult DVD Censorship in the UK and Beyond

Censorship in the British adult film industry tends to attract quite a lot of ink and the much maligned BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is often criticized as being part of the "nanny state" that seeks to over regulate what we can and cannot enjoy as entertainment. Opponents of censorship maintain that the overzealous use of the editing scissors at the BBFC render any regular adult DVD totally pointless as all the best parts end up on the cutting room floor. Whilst this may be true to some degree, Britain is not alone in its struggle to find the ideal balance of what should be deemed acceptable or not for public viewing and situation is even more confused in many countries.

Take Australia for example, it only permitted to sell adult DVDs in the ACT or The Northern Territory. This leaves potential customers in the remaining states and territories with two choices, order via the Internet or conventional mail order from the two territories that are authorized to sell porn or purchase it illegally from a bricks and mortar sex shop. Many people do the former which is simply a way around the law but it has always been the case that there is an under the counter trade in sex shops for those who wish to pursue it. Things changed recently however when a group of sex shop owners in Western Australia started to openly flaunt the law and sell adult films under the premise that because the two authorized states could sell by mail order to their customers but they couldn't sell to them directly, the current law contravened their greater right to trade inter state. A complicated and unnecessary situation that does little to serve the public interest, but how is the situation in other countries?

Germany for example has relatively relaxed laws relating to porn. If you are going to buy it mail order or via the Internet, you have to register with the post office to prove your age, but this is not limited only to porn, the same is the case for any over 18 film. Holland, often seen as a bastion of liberalism, is true to its image and has relaxed porn laws. With classification guidelines much more open and no significant anti porn lobby, Amsterdam is the de facto porn hub of Europe with a lot of on line material and adult company head offices based there.

Whatever our European neighbours and cousins further afield are doing in their own countries, censorship continues to be a very emotive issue in the UK. This is likely to remain the case until the BBFC are able to reconcile the fact that whilst they are charged with protecting the public interest, all of their efforts count for nothing in real terms. Whatever they snip from pornography for sale within Britain, hardcore, uncut versions of the same film can simply be streamed or downloaded directly into the home of anyone with an Internet connection with a simple click of the mouse which makes a mockery of their perceived role as guardian of the nation's moral well being.
